Diljit Dosanjh and Nimrat Khaira starrer Jodi might have faced some struggles during its domestic release, but the film has managed to captivate the international audience, and the same is evident from the film’s collection in the US. As per Deadline, the movie earned $734,000 in the first two days after it released on just 125 screens in the US which is quite noteworthy for a Punjabi film releasing in a largely English speaking market.
In India, Jodi started slow at the box office, mainly because the film did not get many shows on its opening day. As per industry tracker Sacnilk, the film could only earn Rs 65 lakh. But after four days of release, the film has earned Rs 4 crore gross in the domestic market. As per the publication, the film’s overseas collection stands at Rs 8 crore taking its overall collection to Rs 12 crore.
Jodi faced some controversy before its release in the domestic market. Said to be based on the life of Punjabi singer Amar Singh Chamkila and his second wife Bibi Amarjot Kaur, the film found itself in legal trouble after Patiala-based Ishdeep Randhawa moved court claiming that Chamkila’s first wife Gurmail Kaur had already sold the exclusive rights to make Chamkila’s biopic to his father Gurdev Singh. Gurdev Singh passed away in November 2022.
Recently, Diljit Dosanjh gave a smashing performance at Coachella that was applauded by the Punjabi community across the world. Diljit’s manager, Sonali Singh, told Billboard, “We knew that his performance was going to be appreciated, but the reception he received went well beyond our expectations. And we also love the fact how his community and larger Indian audiences, along with other celebrities and media houses all across globe were able to come together for this moment and support Singh.”
